"King of May" reminds me of Matthew Sheppard. "The Living" is dedicated to my deceased uncle. I want "My Skin" played at my funeral. This is such a deep, amazing record. Sample "Thick as Thieves". If you are attracted to intelligent and relevant "arty" music, buy this!

This is, hands down, Natalie Merchant's finest hour. The track "My Skin" is the most achingly beautiful piece of music you will most likely ever hear. It is absolute perfection.

Her talent on this album is unmatched by any of her previous work and it's a special treat for any that loves this genre.

In this album Merchant takes on nothing less than the female psyche. In an obvious nod to the book "Raising Ophelia" Merchant explores the various roles women assume in sociary, and the ways those roles define, and in some cases destroy their hosts. The result is a haunting , spiritual and melodic portrait of it's subject. Life is sweet is a beautiful ( and overplayed) tribute to simple gratitude for the things life offers. Frozen Charlotte ( which features the Innocence Mission's Karen Peris) and My Skin are darker fare. A remarkable album that still keeps delivering 15 years later. Get the whole thing

Seriously. I bought it when I was seventeen and it has been in the rotation since! (I'm now almost 29) Great rainy day music and the girl who sings backup on Golden Bells sounds JUST like the same girl who randomly sang back up on Blind Melon's haunting "Mouthful of Cavities." To be quite honest, Kind and Generous is NOT the best song on this album....I'd suffice it's the more gimmick track of them all, but the rest? Pure Perfection! I highly recommend!
