  • WOW!

Andrew's musical referencing is brilliant! In style, he takes from straightforward pre-war jazz to quirky Klezmer. With his lyrics, he takes from everything from Hoagy Carmichael to Robert Schumann's lieder "Ich grolle nicht." If your brain (read musical exposure, thus appreciation) is lacking a "long view," I'd skip this one, but if you appreciate talent, BUY BUY BUY, everything this man does is new but old and enjoyable. Totally twisted, totally great!

would say that this album is overall a good buy. Andrew Bird is a great artist. His control over the violin is astonishing and the main reason I listen to his music. For those tracing Bird, from his recently released Noble Beast and Armchair Apocrypha, back to the roots of his genius, start with this album.
  • Worth the money!

Wow! This album is so different from Noble Beast...but it still flares Andrew Bird's amazing talents. You definitely feel like you are traveling back in time as each track plays. This is a definite owner!
  • The sound transports you back in time.

Andrew Bird has morphed and progressed as a lyricist and songwriter throughout his varied catalog, and his virtuoso as a violinist shows in high relief on this album. It has the nostalgic allure of a smoke filled ballroom on tracks such as The Ides of Swing, and later, the gloomy, almost foreboding melody of Swedish Wedding March. This is a wonderful album for a collector of sounds of bygone days, or just for someone who wants to explore Bird's range of styles and academic knowledge of the violin. A great listen for a rainy day.

I recently found Andrew Bird's earlier recordings with Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire and was exteremely delighted. The fusion of multiple styles is very pleasing and makes the album worth more than a few listens.
  • Quirky, addictive, and really, really good.

I have been a devout Bird watcher for several years now, but have only recently delved into the world of the Bowl of Fire. Readers, I am a convert. Thrills delivers what its title implies. You can hear the joy and youthful enthusiasm these musicians have for their music in every single song. Although Bird's fiddling is unpolished, it's not from lack of talent or experience, but rather due to the down-home bluegrassy style. Bird evokes fledgling '20s jazz in several of the songs, while integrating the quirky prose he is well known for today. You can hear the seeds of greatness in this band, and it's a pity Bird ditched them so soon. I would gladly trade Armchair Apocrypha for Thrills any day of the week.

This guy is great on the violin and his voice is amazing. You won't be dissapointed. I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next!

Took me a few listens to fall in love with this album, seeing as I bought it while much more familiar with Andrew Bird's later work (without his Bowl Of Fire), but I can easily say that it has become one of my favorite albums as of late. I have definitely grown in appreciation for the style, which I was uncertain about at first. Give it time! It is amazing once you start to familiarize yourself with the songs/style. Definitely unique and well-done, great lyrics, moving songs, as to be expected from the genius of Andrew Bird. If you're just getting into him though and are not sure what album to buy, I would recommend Weather Systems above all. However, if you are into this style already, then get Thrills pronto, man. (I dance every time I hear #11!) Thanks for reading.
