I discovered STH a couple of years ago through a video that used his song "Winter Morning" from his first album "Find Yourself Here". The last two years have been quite the journey as I wanted to start at the beginning and listen to his album progression. What I love about his catalog is that it ALWAYS progresses. Ben Leopard is not content to keep hypnotizing and amazing you with the same layers of sounds (though he could!). With each album it gets better…and better…and better. He added drums on the album "All that is Wild and Alive" flawlessly, convincing you that there must be more members to this amazing one man creation. Nope. It's Ben, doing his thing. In "Glowing in the Living Light" he has perfected his sound while adding some cool surprises, like a lap steel. If you enjoy the music of Hammock, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, or anything in the post-rock/instrumental world, don't allow this one to pass you by.

Having been following Startle The Heavens' music since his first release "Find Yourself Here" I've been able to hear him progress as a musician. Each album seems to outdo the last in both musicianship and craft (and that's not to say that it wasn't already good). STH takes on a heaver Post-Rock Direction this time around but doesn't lose his attention to detail in the softer moments. The addition of the steel guitar in tracks like "Clouds On a Calm Sky" and The Approach of Night" come as a nice surprise to the album and help set his sound apart even further from other artists living in the genre. I find it hard not to get lost in beautiful open landscapes with track titles such as "When California Was Wild" or "Skin of the Mountain's Face". The album art is also very fitting to the overall sound and feel of the album. If you're new to the Post-Rock/Instrumental genre or a long time fan like myself, you're sure be satisfied with this release.

This one is better then the rest. I am glad they added way more drums this time around because one: they have such a great drummer and two: they just become that much more epic sounding. I havent listened to it full through yet but I can tell they really did a great job on this one and that not much has changed besides the fact that is just better newer music by them. Cool to see there growth as a band.

This album creates a beautiful landscape to wonder while your listening to it. Startle the heavens has been one of my favorites for a while now and this album is amazing. It has more drum and guitar, but its a perfect mixture and a great step STH.
