  • Joanna is Amazing!

I came across Joanna Newsom and was checking out her music on iTunes, and have to say, I was intially turned off by The Milk Eyed Mender and Ys. Her voice, which I have since warmed to, is certainly an acquired taste. But Have One On Me was it. After hearing the stunningly beautiful and joyful "Good Intentions Paving Co," I immediately changed my opinion of Joanna and proceeded to explore the intricacies of her daunting catalog. I can safely say that Have One on Me is an absolute MASTERPIECE. Her voice sounds smooth and pretty here; she's a lot less quirky and more accessible. I am in love with this album. Highlights are the aforementioned "Good Intentions...," "Easy," "In California"/"Does Not Suffice," "Occident," "Soft As Chalk"... they are all brilliant! It's a very majestic album and she has earned the comparisons to the talented Joni Mitchell. I happen to love how long it is. One of the best albums of the 2010s. Please add your music to Spotify, though. That would be the icing on the cake.

I know all artists need to grow but I never cared much for Ys and this one is even more of a disappointment. It just sounds, to me, like background music. I miss the bouncy melodies and general runtimes of her older stuff.

This is her best album, even the Y's is my favorite. This one is ridiculously beautiful. I look at The Milk Eyed Mender as her first songs, the ones from her childhood, audacious and childlike. Then Y's was her coping with the loss of childhood, moving into adulthood realizing loss and realizing love. It seemed that album was the album in which love first appeared to her. But Have One On Me, she is a woman. Her voice not only is the best its ever been, but the structure and quality of the songs bot in lyric and m,elody are the most complex and mature. I cannot wait for more from her. In California - The most beautiful "love" song I jhave ever heard Go Long - I wrote an essay about this for school, it puts all of my feelings towards men, even as a gay male, into form. Esme - Go out into the woods, look into the sky through the trees and listen. Baby Birch - Possibly the saddest song on the album Kingfisher - This one was my least favorite on the album until I listened to it, really listened to it, "I Know you, you know me, where have we met before?" Have one on me - I love the spider motifs. Love legs, love 'm You and Me Bess Does Not Suffice Jackrabbits - Joanna is really vulnerable in this song, I feel it is a great place to start with this album, she opened her Wisconsin show with it. Occident - "Slow heart, curb your pace. Smoke me out a' my hidin' place" Autumn - This was my favorite when I heard the album first, I was going through rough waters and Summer was closing and Autumn was approaching. It's these moments when i realize why Joanna Newsom is my favorite Poet/singer/songwriter/harpist/visionary. It all seems to make ense to me, like she were a little nymph from my aorta

To those who may not know she almost completely lost her voice that why theres a change to her sound yet I still love how she works with the modification jack rabbits 81 autumn r sum of my favs and her writing is still just as intriguing not sure what the complaints I. Trying to be mainstream is all about but hey to each his own

Joanna Newsom is one of those artists cursed by her oddness. You can't like her if you don't like how strange her vocal style is, but trying to muffle that to please a broader audience also muffles the creativity. But I may be wrong, and she might have just run out of good songs. With this three-cd album it seems like she's hoping something will hit. A few of them aren't bad, but nothing is noteworthy here. Her previous work was odd, which is why many of my friends didn't like it when I played her. Unfortunately, toning down her quirky voice and style made her sound like a standard hippy folk singer, and the songs on this album, without her usual, distinctive voice, are mundane at best.
  • sounds like a childish Joni Mitchell type in this album. in a good way =D

Of course Milk Mended Meander is my fav JN album, and when I first heard "Sprout and The Bean" I was actually not thrown back by her voice but pulled in-I thought "Wow. this is so..different....AND SHE PLAYS HARP?" "who is this girl" I said...and sure enough a friend lent me her CD's and after hours of listening to her debut over and over, I got through Ys still intrigued...and I was dying to get to her newest album..so I rented it from the library and uploaded it... YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Autumn is my favorite track on this album.

Have One On Me was one of the most beautiful, graceful, and intensely personal records of 2010. It seemed like you could get to know about Joanna's life and story better through listening to it than by having an actual interview with the artist herself. I know it's been said before, but one of the most attractive (though also slightly intimidating) aspects of the record is how big it is and how easy it is to lose yourself in it at any given point. Pick a song and go. The tracks are unique, expertly sequenced, and if you're willing to put forth the effort: extremely rewarding. This isn't an overnight thing though. It took me about 4 months to get through the entire album, and I'm still digesting it. Songs that you didn't really consider extraordinary start to open themselves up to you ("Occident", "Baby Birch", "Autumn"), which I believe takes remarkable talent. Great job, Joanna.

I used to like Joanna Newsom a lot better when she was called Kate Bush.

This album may not have the epic 5-song breathtaking quality of "Ys", but it is beautiful nonetheless. Some songs are quieter and more subdued, but when these songs do hit you, they hit you hard. Her words are as captivating as ever, and I love that she's added the piano to her music. For me, "Baby Birch" and "Kingfisher" are the finest on this record, and reach a level of awe-inspiring beauty that even "Ys" couldn't deliver. Other standouts are "Jackrabbits", "Have One On Me", "Autumn" and "'81".
  • Art. This belongs in a museum or something

Joanna Newsom has created a work of art with “Have One On Me.” The album is something honest, something time-consuming, like a drink one needs to take slowly. Her harp is at its finest, completed by the mini-orchestra comprised of different sounds from song to song. The melodies are not catchy, yet they are beautiful and seem strangely fitting with her classic scratchy vocals. The songs are not easy by any means, as the music calls for complete attention and most hang out at around 7:00, but they are each worth the time and concentration. All in all, the album is something beautiful. Something rare and haunting.
