Ys is almost 15 years old, but it as aged well. An essential collection of pristine, detailed folk opuses. The lyrics and the instrumentation are beautiful. Joanna's unique vocals accentuate the lyrics in compelling ways. It's not particularly accessible, but ultimately it's a truly rewarding listen that grows on the listener more with every revisit.

Yes! No hyperbole. All five songs are opuses. We’re lucky to have her presence.

In Ys, Joanna Newsom proves herself as one of the greatest lyricists of the twenty-first century. Her poetic descriptions and wild story telling are mesmerizing, and her unique and expressive vocal delivering brings every song to life. Though this album is certainty not easy listening, with the proper attention, it can reveal layer upon layer of beauty, complexity, and magic.

This album came to me at the exact time I needed it and I love it so much. Newsoms lyrics are so intricate and beautiful woven in with her amazing harp playing. Can’t stop listening to this album and will love it for years and years to come.

perhaps what is most amazing is that nothing like this has ever been created before. most of my friends can't stand her voice, i on the other hand can't understand how others aren't completely spellbound by it. I tend to love a lot of different music when I first find it, but this album has stayed with me for the last eight years, and there are still days that go by where it is the only thing I'll listen to. Joanna has proven to be the greatest american lyricist of our century. With music that recalls past, and melodic and lyrical bravery that is wholly modern. There is nothing like this woman.

No words can do it justice. Every listen teaches me something new about myself and the world. It sounds cliche but it has changed my life. Listen to it as a whole at night. If you don't do that you rob yourself the experience.

I have had this album for awhile and just cannnot get into it. It is barely listenable. Newsom's voice ranges from Norah Jones-esque to screeching harpie, and her stream of conciousness rambling is intolerable. The music is lovely, and would have been more then enough to make a nice instrumental album. This album should be played during military and police interogations, the suspect would talk immediately.
