Adagio for Strings is the most beautiful music ever composed. I feel every emotion while listening to this wonderful work of art. A must for every library.
  • 'Adagio' out of tune? Are you crazy?

This isn't out of tune. They're called dissonances...not intonation issues. There is absolutely nothing 'pitchy' about this performance. It's flawless. And, while I'm on here, let me say that nobody conducts 'Adagio' like Bernstein.
  • Maybe he should tune first next time...

Selections on this CD are quite lovely. The reason I bought this CD though was for the Adagio, which is not very lovely at all. The tempo is very slow, which would be very nice, except for the fact that the entire piece is just sooo out of tune. It just sort of spoils it. I highly recommend the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.

An incredible work of art! Barber's Adagio for Strings, when paired with the Adagietto from Symphony No. 5, make for the most moving and uplifting 20 minutes of music I have ever heard.

Bernstein truly executes this preformance well. In comparison to other renditions of this timeless piece, this one is my favorite. I like how he takes his time with all of the different segments of this peice, not rushing, but giving the perfect length of time to preform each note, carefully and beautifully. I was surprised to find out it was not the top on the list of "adagios," but was even topped by a techno song that is good but not nearly as amazing as this recording. Though it will seem long with 9:56, if you sit back in a quiet place, and just listen, I promise you will be blown away.

Adagio for strings is one of the most transcendent and beautiful songs ever composed- it contains every possible emotion, and is simply amazing. All of Barber's works are gorgeous and modern- this album does a wonderful job of capturing the beauty of Barber. This is the New York Phil at its best!
