There are so many things that are great about this album, but the one thing that stands out is Michael Daves ability to bring Chris Thile out of his refined shell into punch-you-in-the-eardrum roughness vocally & instrumentally. I love that this album sounds like you're sitting in at Rockwood for an evening and you get to hear strings buzzing, one or two errant notes, and the vocal strains that may or may not get reach all the way to the note which they were aimed. Daves has a way of man-handling his plywood Truetone into submission that fits these songs perfectly & Thile's playing is wilder and maybe more spontaneous than what you're used to hearing from him. I'm glad that in an Idol-centric polished pop music industry that true raw recordings like this project can still see the light of day.
