When I started college in 1974 a roommate of mine got this deal where a record company would send him free albums if he would listen and review them. Most of them were less than memorable. Michael Franks was the one diamond in the rough. the album foreshadows the musical diversity and talent of this prolific artist. If anything It demonstrates some rock and roll chops for an artist who made his rep in other venues. Mostly it reveals a depth of lyrical and musical talent. To anyone looking for something old and new check this out. You will be pleased.
  • Michael Frank's Actual Debut--Brilliant

Mike headed to a studio to create his first musical masterpiece; this record actually was a project that helped Franks get his Ph.D while he was teaching music. Of course, the rest is history, as Michael proved one of the most original and unique voices and composers in all of music. Michael rarely gets the credit he deserves for being a brilliant singer stylist, and he's a great guy to boot. The Art of Tea is usually looked at as Michael Franks' first official record, but this one, Previously Unavailable, is a sonic treat for Michael's fans who haven't heard what came before his major label debut. Priceless.
  • The Overlooked Debut

This cd (album) was recorded in 1973 and promtly forgotton but it did contain one hit, the opening track "Can't Seem To Shake This Rock And Roll" and with the featured wha wha guitar sounds like a song from the movie "Superfly" soundtrack. "Lovesick Lizzie" is Michael's trademark wordplay lyric about a prostitute featuring an upbeat arrangement with a full horn section. This album overall is a collection of songs recorded with no formula, no cohesion whatsoever, kind of like a collection of singles thrown together but the abrupt stylistic change track to track do noting to deter this collection from being throughly enjoyable. Kudos to DRG for the excellent remastering.
