Although Alan Cummings is a good actor I do not like his rendition of emcee. He is too rough, Raw and angry sounding for my liking in this part. I was spoiled by seeing the master emcee joel grey. Joel grey was sinister yet inviting, frustrated yet smooth, subtle and scary. Perverted yet sneaky. Joel grey's german accent was convincing and natural. Joel grey also clearly understood the time period and the society this took place in. Cummings was overt, angry, clearly perverted and way too open about what he was. Okay his performance would be good if he played vietnam era or after that time. He plays better to the post babyboomers type of musicals. Yes Cummings is a good performer ( liked him in burlesque better. I guess what grates at me as he did not fit the period, time and circumstances of the play. Grey therefore has a better grasp on this particular part. Both are good actors
