Wow! What an album. I did not expect such a well thought out and alternative take on these tracks! That's my fault, this is Kirk Whalum were talking about. I had this album for weeks and just thought to myself, I'll check it out later, man I wasted a lot of time. Everything is Everything, and I love it!

Thanks!!! It is about time for someone to give credit where credit is due... Donny was by far one of the best musicians to walk this planet, but for his personal shortcomings he never gets the credit he deserves.. Once Again...Thanks Kirk...They should give you a Grammy for this one...
  • Donny & Kirk, what's not to like?

Donny Hathaway was indeed a total musician, well trained, well schooled and full of soul. Same can be said of Kirk. Donny was as earthy as he was capable of delivering heart-rendered ballads. The focus of Kirk's interpretation of Donny's music tends to favor his earthiness. I would have loved to have seen Kirk include the stellar ballad "You Were Meant For Me" to satisfy my urge to get a greater cross-section of the music mastery and tender side of Donny Hathaway. Donny had the chops to be a singular balladeer of the highest order, delivering that "in the mood music" or quiet storm format that sets hearts afire. His albums tended to be more uneven than merely given over to mood music. You weren't going to put the needle down on a Donny Hathaway record and get a singular sound and that was the beauty of it. Gritty one minute, funky the next, smooth and somber to follow... That was Donny. I love the music on Kirk's homage to the music of Donny Hathaway, I would've just loved it more if it included more ballads on the level of "You Were Meant For Me."

Donny Hathaway was a TOTAL musician. Along with perfect pitch, he was an arranger, musical director, singer. That voice, phrasing, inflection (Lalah hits low notes and sounds like her father!)the tonal texture: Texture is exactly what Kirk has brought to this body of work. The texture of everything Donny Hawthaway brought us is here and represented by Kirk. Enjoy! Giving Up...is so hard to do when you love somebody!

Whalum's horn never disappoints...whether its playing Hymns in the Garden, strolling through memory lane with Baby Face, or here deftly paying homage to one of musics most underrated prophets...Donny Hathaway...Don't miss this, this is music at its best. Kirk you make Donny proud...
