If you consider yourself a fan of any modern music, or music in general, you need this album. Period.
  • To my ears this one's the best

I usually don't find such a huge difference, between albums with the same songs on them, and I'm not knowledgeable in the history of what the ORIGINAL recordings are,but I gotta say I listened to "Soul Man" on every one of these compilations and this one from 1990 Atlantic was THE BEST.I have been told that I have a good ear,but honestly this one just sounds the "clearest" to me - for me I like to be able to hear every note - even if there might be a little hiss or crackle ( being a child of the '70s and LPs perhaps.) But the other recordings sounded muffled and "muddy" to me - like they tried to smoothe them out but instead just succeeded in making all the sounds sound at the same level-like I would have to seriously mess with the equalizer to make it "clean"again. This recording sounds perfect as is.

From as far as I can go back, musically (singing), particularly singing w/ another guy (Andy, Arkeem, etc.) there was a Sam & Dave song to be done. "Soul Man" was a staple w/ Andy but immortalized w/ the Bee & A.D.(BAD) show w/ A.D & I later along w/ "When Something is Wrong...". Long Live the DUET, long live SAM & DAVE!!

There are 6 more songs included here that were not on original lp. Every song here is the original. Tracks 1,2,4,16,18 and 21 must have been added by Rhino. Some were b'sides some were unreleased. Small Portion and May I Baby were considered rarities until this release. They were B sides that got radio airplay back in the day. If you're looking for an essential S&D collection, this is it!!
  • If this music doesn't move you, you might be dead.

Contrary to this iTunes review, these are in fact the original recordings. Trust me, if they weren't, there would be many angry reviews. With that said, this is the most comprehensive collection I've seen of Sam & Dave, and worth every penny. The songs are classic and simply a ton of fun, and include everything that make soul music great - lots of energy, great vocals, and sincerity. "Soothe Me" is the song that got me into soul when I was a teenager, and it's a love affair that continues to this day, some years later. Disclaimer: I generally find iTunes reviews to be helpful, but I had to write in and note that, in this case, the iTunes review is NOT correct.
