Description

A rare manuscript. A midnight promise. A man who would steal them both away.

Pressured by looming deadlines and an annoying patron, Evie Brown, academic librarian, struggles to find joy this Christmas holiday. Worse, her sick father is ready to abandon treatments and surrender to fate — a decision she refuses to accept. Delving into a medieval manuscript, she searches for answers in the distant past.

For the woman who has stolen his heart, only a perfect proposal will do. Ash Lockwood, botanist, has transformed the rooftop greenhouse into a tropical fairyland. But when Evie begs him to help her harvest mistletoe at midnight, they venture down a different garden path – unaware that danger circles close.

When their plans implode and a murderer threatens their lives, only invention and teamwork will save them.

If you’ve stumbled upon this fantastic short story, you are in for a treat! It’s intelligent, steamy and shimmers with holiday lore. I had read a handful of Anne’s books prior to this one, but felt the overwhelming need to purchase the rest of Anne’s collection (all 12) and binge accordingly. I wasn’t disappointed, only sad that I’m still not immersed in her Elemental Steampunk World! <3

Evie Brown is an academic librarian at the renowned Lister Institute. She has dreams of heading her own projects but is limited by the times, prejudices and family obligations to a sick father she desperately wishes to cure. There’s a certain young botanist who’s captured her fancy and they’ve been given a project to work on together. Yet all is not rosy as Evie has an unwanted and undaunted supercilious and sinister man seeking her attentions and an opportunity has come up for her to study at Oxford. Christmas has brought many surprises this year now Evie must decide how her future will unfold. Action packed adventures as Evie and Ash search for a last chance cure and explore their feelings. A mechanical squirrel, a murderer and Christmas make this an unusual and exciting tale. Love the steampunk world, the science and the old world sensibilities mixed. Absolutely love the sweet and heated romance between Evie and Ash! Wonderful story for any time of year. I received a copy from the author. This is my honest review.

A very good book. It was interesting to have a female be in a field not normally for women for that time. Evie and Ash made a great duo, personally and professionally.

Love that this takes place around the holidays and that her name is Eve. Still has a case to solve for both the main character and the queen’s agents. Still hot intimate scenes and a green house on the roof of a building?! Swoon!!! A must read.
