In Braille Literacy: A Functional Approach, Diane Wormsley describes an approach to braille reading and writing instruction that taps into the learner's individual likes (and dislikes), specific needs, and individual goals. The approach is “functional” in that it starts from where the student is, and builds on personal experiences to introduce vocabulary that is meaningful to the learner. The approach works with adults who are learning braille for the first time as well as with children.
