In firm opposition of Christian dogma, Joseph Wheless would author several books and essays on the subject of religions, with particular scorn reserved for the Christian faith. Wheless's systematic identification of what he viewed as flaws, contradictions and forgeries present in the religion are presented to the reader in an attempt to persuade and undermine Christianity as a credible entity worthy of belief.
In contrast to the accepted scholarly views of his time, Wheless was particularly opposed to the idea that Jesus Christ existed. Somewhat notorious in the religious Deep South, Wheless nevertheless became a successful lawyer noted for his passionate defenses of atheistic and free-thinking organizations. Born Methodist, it was when he applied lawyerly scrutiny to the gospel documents and their sources that he became firmly convinced of their falsehood.
