Ok. So they say that Cornell is best. This is the same month as Cornell and I find it to be just as good. This is a fantastic example of 1977 and there are no downsides. What this loses is Cornell’s Scarlet/Fire, Cornell loses in this one’s Slipknot/ Franklin’s Tower, and Eyes. I’d say that with DP #14, this is my favorite DP. You wouldn’t go wrong to make this your first.

to find out that you are the eyes of the world. Love this version. Just about 2 minutes into the intro the band backs off waiting for Jerry to start singing. Then he's like, "no not yet", continues jamming. Drums and bass kick it back into gear and follow along. Classic Dead.

This show starts tight from "The Music Never Stops" to maybe the best version of "Lazy/ Supplication"... ever. Jerry is on fire all evening and his voice is still good. The Sugaree is "jammy" and should be a top Five choice. Second jam on Eyes alone keeps this one swinging against Barton Hall. As a plus, Keith hasn't faded into the background and is still rolling on keys. A must have for any Dancing Bear.

While the sound of where the band was in '77 isn't my personal favorite (I won't say which lady is to blame for that ;) man O man this Sugaree absolutely melts brains. It builds steadily, rolls back a bit to catch it's breath with each verse, and then just completely smashes through the breaking point when Jerry...goes...OFF. Fortunately the whole gang stays with him lockstep for the entire journey...enjoy!
  • Best Dead Show In History

This is absolutely the best dead show I have ever heard. Have listened to it 30+ times and am still amazed every time. Favorite show right next to the May 8th 1977 Barton Hall show. Arguably the Morning Dew in this show is better than the Barton Hall version. Can't get enough of this incredible magical gem of a musical treasure!

This prime performance from '77 (Vintage Dead for many Heads) is....well beyond solid to say the least. Not only are the Dead on the top of their game, but all throughout are some of their flat out best playing. The songs are tight, clear, and perfectly executed, way beyond what you'd expect from a studio recording, showcasing the very thing that made the Grateful Dead the Grateful Dead! The jams flow perfectly and the playing masterfully ranges from eerie at times, to absolutely beautiful. Really, if you're a Deadhead at all, you need to hear the end jam on disk two in particular, one of my favorite Dead moments I have heard thus far. But the whole album is fantastic from beginning to end with no filler or flubbs, the only song I'm not the most enthusiastic for is Dancing in the Street, which is far from bad, but I have other favorite renditions of it. While you can find more complete Dead recordings, many other steller '77 performances, and ones with more essential songs in the setlists, this is the volume I'll always want on my iPod for a quick fix of the best.

It's not Barton Hall, but what is? The Help-Slipknot-Franklin's Tower jam is worth the price of this Dick's Pick alone. I'm only giving it 4 stars because every show from this month was incredible, with Barton Hall being the best (if not the Dead's greatest concert ever). Dead Heads often argue over which time period of the band was the best, and while one can make wonderful arguments for several different stages in their career, 1977 (May in particular) is universally claimed by most as tough to top. This Dick's Pick provides a great example of why.

I purchased only Terrapin Station from this album and thought it was terrible. I plan to delete it from my list.
