Dead Set was my first exposure to live Dead. At that time the only other Dead record I owned was Go To Heaven, which I still love to this day. I love every song on Dead Set. Great versions of Franklin's Tower, Fire on the Mountain, Candyman and Broke Down Palace. After hearing this I went on to get every official release, 500 hours of tapes from shows and saw them 28 times and today I have a massive collection.... It all started with a Dead Set!!
  • solid live album...get the expanded version.

dead set is a compilation of performances from 1980. while this is not one of my favorite eras of the band (nor are the '80's in general) i do think this is a good album. the performances here, for the most part, are well played and there are some really nice cuts, like the slowed-down and mellow friend of the devil, minglewood blues, passenger, or the strong vocal take on brokedown palace. to me, the only weak aspect of this record is that it doesn't fully represent the band during this time, i.e. there are no long improvsations or seuges that make listening to this band truly special. this is somewhat corrected with the recent expanded version of the album, which is more wholly representative of a true dead concert. a good one to pick up but there are certainly better live releases and bootlegs than this.

This was the first Dead album I bought on vinyl, and I can still hear the hissing and popping that was always loudest on side three. Recorded from shows in late 1980, Brent Mydland had joined with the Dead only shortly before these shows actually took place, but his talent and natural ability shine through on this album. "Friend of the Devil" is significantly slower than usual, but in some ways it's better, and Bob's vocals are never more powerful than they are here on "Samson and Delilah" and "Little Red Rooster." A little later on in the long strange trip that is the Grateful Dead's journey, but once again they are able to prove their standing as one of the finest live shows in rock n roll history.

Im shocked nobody has commented on this album! This is when the Dead were totally PEAKING 79-81 were some of their best live shows ever! Before Jerrys stroke... The sound quality is amazing, Jerrys voice and guitar is as tight and as precise as ever and the band is just UNITED! Plus its played on the Deads home turf of San Francsico where Jerry Garcia was born and is there temple. Ive heard hundreds of bootlegs from the Dead and in my opinion this is a great album and is definately one of my favorites, plus the selection of songs they have absolutely ROCKS!!! Get it man you wont regret it, I promise you!
