I trace her all the way back to her Rufus days & "Tell Me Something Good" The the 'Chan'son Papilion" Days then the Command Performance on the 'Exhale' soundtrack!! Long Live Chaka Khan!

The TRUE "very best" of Chaka Khan is the 1980 release of "Naughty" (which features the song Papillion contained in this "collection"). If you want to experience the TRUE Chaka Khan surrounded by the best session musicians available on this planet earth (including Ashford and Simpson input), track down the Naughty album in whatever format. I was only 15 but had to have it. It's one of those pieces of ART you literally wore out on vinyl, threw the warbled/mangled cassette tape out of your car window.......then found the only CD release as only a Japanese import (but well worth the price). I knew Chaka from Rufus, not from "I Feel For You". Read her comment of when she first heard the remix of that song. She said she was "embarrassed" of the "Cha, Cha, Chaka, Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan" intro. On the Naughty album, the intro to "All Night's, All Right" features a true musician in the background saying "Let's Go MF's" with Chaka (more noticeable in the recording) saying "Who said that?". It's raw, it rare, it's the REAL Chaka Khan. "Through The Fire" isn't but she had to make a living too before moving to England to be appreciated without "fickle Americans" (her words).

This is Chaka at her finest and most diverse. ..This album made me wonder why we don't love this performer the way we do, say, Aretha. Covers, ? she makes each one hers.!,
  • So serious!
