  • Barbra's Best

Sure Funny Girl & The Way We Were & A Star Is Born are better known, but this movie and especially this music is the pinnacle of Barbra's art. Putting her whole heart into it and forgetting her superstar image, Barbra created a gorgeous, sexy and mysterious masterpiece. The music is sung as the inner thoughts of the main character and is as sophisticated as any soundtrack ever created if not the most. Just brilliant.

She is my favorite of all there is no voice like hers. It's been so many years and I still listen to it and love it even more. The lyrics are inspiring and the music sublime and meaningful. This is a masterpiece.

Very good! Definitely worth buying! I bought the whole album and haven't stopped listening to it since! One of Barbra's best albums and movies of her career! Even if you dont want to buy the whole album at least get the song " papa can you hear me" and " a piece of sky" they both are heart warming and they give me goosebumps every time I listen to them!!

I have listened to this soundtrack for a dominant period of my life. Nose.... Style......I have never liked anything about Barbra, yet her performance in this movie creates a new genre. I love it. My love for this C.D. was initiated from the movie Yentl, which I watched when I was 12 years old. This soundtrack renews the pleasure and enjoyment from the movies story-line.

I loved the movie and had purchased the record many years ago. Loved the whole thing and listened to it constantly. I am not a fan of her politics but you can not deny she is an incredible singer.

This movie was a labor of love for many years for her. The music clearly represents the passion she put forth in the over all production of the movie. Each song is almost a mini movie in my mind. Her phrasing ,diction, and emotion in each song are impecable. Where as most people enjoy listening to upbeat energetic music when they attend a gym, i have found myself listening to this soundtrack becasue of its many inspirational songs it features. Words of hope and encouragement whenI need them. Its a wonderful film and the music is just as special.
  • One Of The Best

This cd is a soundtrack to the film of the same name yes, but I disagree that the sequence of songs merely highlight the film. This cd (lp) was intended to be a concept album, the songs tell the same story as the film does, the songs are sequenced in order of "appearance" in the film. Barbra spent a number of years developing the storyline and a number of years recording the demos. Her boxed set "Just For The Record" features some of the songs in their songwriting format. This cd contains Barbra's finest singing, she was forty at the time and her voice had twenty years of experience, she would never return to the power she used in these recordings. All of the songs are just massive cinematic pieces, Barbra just soars to an amazing climax during "A Piece Of Sky." The studio version of "The Way He Makes Me Feel" was a huge radio hit, it was in the same rotation as Barry Manilow's "Read 'Em And Weep" and Wham!'s "All She Want's." So in retrospect it can transport you to a place in time. I wish this cd was one of the remastered lp's re-released in 2002, it deserved it, hence the four -star rating. I have to harp again on the remastering, it's not, it's a typical 80's analog transfer.
  • Could have been the best Streisand album EVER

I loved this album when it FIRST appeared. The songs by Michel Legrand and the Bergmans, sung in the way only Streisand can, are pure magic. Why then were they remastered and drowned in studio reverb? It not only takes something away from the purity of Barbra's voice but adds a 'fake' quality to it all. Talking of studios too, why oh why were the studio versions of "...Make me feel" and "No Matter..." included as 'bonus' tracks when there is the most glorious PROLOGUE to the film soundtrack that was omitted? I first heard this album years ago and couldn't wait to see the movie (which, by the way, makes more sense of the album and is equally as special) and when I heard the Prologue I was upset that it was not included. Overall, I would recommend this album on the strength of the wonderful songs and their sublime, lush orchestration (hence a 4 star recommendation) but the new, 'modern' production and choice of numbers prevents it getting a 5 star. Just as an aside as well, who in heaven decided to put a MONO sountrack on the home movie and why, oh why, is it still only available on VHS????
