I wouldn’t call this an homage so much as a re-envisioning of the original concept. Listen to the Vivaldi—study it—then hear what Piazzolla does with it. The music is complex and rewards repeated listening.
The Vivaldi is well performed and Kremer adds some beautiful colors to the notes. What really impresses is the brilliance of Piazzolla. These are not your grandma's polite, Venetian seasons—it’s the jungle of Buenos Aires, and Piazzolla makes you FEEL it. Amazingly, there are no percussionists, so the musical onomatopoeia is done entirely with bows, strings and fingerboards.
Kremer is a virtuoso: he tumbles and soars through the music brilliantly. Don’t let the iTunes previews scare you—its not all “fire and brimstone”. The cello solo in Otoño Porteño are gorgeous, and Invierno is great fun.
