Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy has inspired musicals, ballets, operas, and, of course, countless movies, including Italian director Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 classic and Australian director Baz Luhrmann’s stylish remake starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The Bard’s play is so fundamental to our culture-and to the popular trope of star-crossed lovers-that we all feel like we know the story of Romeo and Juliet’s doomed love affair.

And yet, have you ever read the original? And if yes, perchance was it a long, long time ago? The beautiful lyricism of Shakespeare’s storytelling makes poring over his words such a complex treat:
What light in yonder window breaks?
Parting is such sweet sorrow.
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
These are just a few of the play’s immortal lines. And it’s this masterful storytelling that makes the doomed lovers’ untimely deaths that much more poignant.

Absolutely hate this. Read it for school freshman year and it made me so mad the entire time. I have a whole list on why I hate it so much. - R and J only met once at a masquerade ball and didn’t even dance for very long and “fell in love” - friar Laurence is an absolute buffoon (though he discouraged the two from getting married at first) he married them - I understand R and J takes place back when a little girl getting married to an adult man was a completely normal thing but Juliet wasn’t even 13 yet and Romeo was anywhere from 19-21 - the nurse did not have to make so many inappropriate jokes to Juliet - why didn’t Juliet just run away with Romeo when he was banished instead of having a potion made to make her seem dead - Romeo should’ve checked to see if Juliet was still breathing or not before killing himself - Juliet should’ve just gone on with her life after finding Romeo dead instead of killing herself, she still had so much life left to live - her dad is probably bipolar

You gotta be real nimble with the pages of art thou to conclude with thy book. 5 stars for thy romance. 3 stars for everything else

One of the classics I love, this makes fun of romance which is something that needed to be done… regardless of if this was made a long time ago…..
  • Nice introduction to Shakespeare

Straightforward, with an interesting plot. Easier to read than other works by Shakespeare, so it makes sense that it is often taught in ninth grade.
