Description

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

“The most addictive book I've read in ages—so slick and disquieting and clever. Just brilliant.” —Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Family Remains

“Lapena is a master of manipulation.” —USA Today

Welcome to Stanhope. A safe neighborhood. A place for families.

William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he’s been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter, Avery, unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.

Hours later, Avery’s family declares her missing.

Suddenly Stanhope doesn’t feel so safe. And William isn’t the only one on his street who’s hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Avery's neighbors become increasingly unhinged.

Who took Avery Wooler?

Nothing will prepare you for the truth.

i love mysteries and thrillers. sheri lapena, however, outdoes all the rest. every time i think i know who the culprit is, another suspect arises. it’s like seeing a crime unfold in real time. the couple next door was great, so i thought this one would be too. it was better! i read the entire book in one day — i haven’t read like that since i was a teenager !!! truly thrilling with an unexpected twist. everyone here is lying and it’s so captivating to find out who.

I read the reviews before I purchased this book. After I started reading it, I realized that the person who wrote the reviews before “I expected more from this author” revealed the plot in the review, and it ruined my reading of the book. It would have been really interesting if I didn’t already know the surprise ending. It was inconsiderate.

But the last paragraphs that are intended to wrap the story up neatly were a little weak.

Awesome story but I wished to see more of the consequences play out in the end. Definitely worth the listen/read if you’re a fan of Lapena or the domestic mystery and suspense genre. She always keeps the twists coming.

It was fast-paced and a plausible and good story until the 9 year old starts thinking very much beyond her age while she is in the neighbor’s basement. She seems like an older teenager in the way she schemes against Marion, and in her plotting to get away. Too bad, because that ruined it for me.
