I read this book in a day, and it’s a decent introductory text with accessible language and everyday examples that are helpful for anyone casually interested in stoicism. However I found a ton of typos and missing words, and some sentences were poorly written which made them confusing. I’m not sure if it was self-published or just had a poor editor, but it could do with an updated edition to make the writing tighter. The “How to” title is also misleading - I would have expected a longer text with more in-depth practical guidance. The examples that are included serve to explain the various principles of Stoicism, but they are quite surface level. I would have appreciated some specific system, routine or framework to adopt in my life as I start to implement principles of stoicism. The book references many classic Stoic works which gives an insight into where to begin with the core texts. However it didn’t really offer much more insight than is fairly obvious from the texts themselves. I have already read Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations and I would have appreciated some deeper perspectives or interpretations in this book as a complementary guide. I appreciated the chapters on the relationship between Stoicism and religion, and Stoicism and psychology, and felt these were worthwhile topics to include. As someone who has done Cognitive Behavioural Therapy I do recognise similarities. Overall the book was fine but I wouldn’t specifically recommend it to someone seriously looking to explore Stoicism. With some edits it could be a good “101” on its own, but to be useful as part of broader study I think it needs to go deeper.

As someone who’s big on self improvement, this book has planted seeds that I’ll nurture for the rest of my life. I’ve had many experiences where I let my emotions take control and lead to actions and experiences I could’ve prevented. This book is great for self introspection as long as you’re open to it and honest with yourself. Great read, straightforward, not long at all but holds information that could rival textbooks. Much love

How to be a stoic not only brought me back to the world of reading, but helped me develop a better way of thinking while riding of my overthinking. No choice but to love it!
