Description

Tyrannical Nurse Ratched rules her ward in an Oregon State mental hospital with a strict and unbending routine, unopposed by her patients, who remain cowed by mind-numbing medication and the threat of electric shock therapy. But her regime is disrupted by the arrival of McMurphy – the swaggering, fun-loving trickster with a devilish grin who resolves to oppose her rules on behalf of his fellow inmates. His struggle is seen through the eyes of Chief Bromden, a seemingly mute half-Indian patient who understands McMurphy's heroic attempt to do battle with the powers that keep them imprisoned. Ken Kesey's extraordinary first novel is an exuberant, ribald and devastatingly honest portrayal of the boundaries between sanity and madness.

As a nurse I have had some years of experience in Behavioral Health, as they call it now. And I have heard many horror stories about the way things used to be and I think the description of the abuse was pretty accurate. As much as I would have liked a happier ending, I think it could not have ended any other way. Thankfully, much has changed since then and patients are treated with much more dignity and respect. It’s not perfect but BH professionals are always looking for better ways to help the mentally ill.

I liked this book a lot. The story is good, the characters have a lot of personality to them, and the ending really caught me by surprise (I won’t spoil it.) My one complaint is that it is difficult to follow what’s being said in some points, which is understandable considering this is an older book that was written years ago. Other than that, I’d give this book a 9/10, would definitely recommend.
