Description

In this insightful and compelling story from book club favorite Susan Mallery, three close friends test the boundaries of how much a woman can give before she has nothing left

After five years as a stay-at-home mom, Gabby Schaefer can't wait to return to work. Oh, to use the bathroom in peace! No twins clamoring at the door, no husband barging in, no stepdaughter throwing a tantrum. But when her plans are derailed by some shocking news and her husband's crushing expectations, Gabby must fight for the right to have a life of her own.

Getting pregnant is easy for Hayley Batchelor. Staying pregnant is the hard part. Her husband is worried about the expensive fertility treatments and frantic about the threat to her health. But to Hayley, a woman who was born to be a mom should risk everything to fulfill her destiny—no matter how high the cost.

Nicole Lord is still shell-shocked by a divorce that wasn't as painful as it should've been. Other than the son they share, her ex-husband left barely a ripple in her life. A great new guy tempts her to believe maybe the second time's the charm…but how can she trust herself to recognize true love?

As their bonds of friendship deepen against the beautiful backdrop of Mischief Bay, Gabby, Hayley and Nicole will rely on good food, good wine and especially each other to navigate life's toughest changes.

LOVED THIS BOOK! Susan Mallery has such a way with the written word. This book takes us into the lives of a group of friends and what is going on in those lives. You laugh, love, & cry along with the characters through out the entire book. I picked it up to read a chapter or two and ended up closing the book on the end at 2 am. I just didn't want to leave it. What can I say about the characters? They are people that live in your neighborhood with problems and concerns that you and your friends are or have gone through. The three friends are in three different places in their lives. This book details the journey's they each take to reach a level of satisfaction in their personal lives and the conflict they have to go through to get there. It's a very emotional book to read and will tug on your heart strings.

This wonderful book about three friends has a central thread - children and family. Gabby, Hayley, and Nicole became friends in The Girls of Mischief Bay, and they will be friends forever. Each have their own situations and problems, but when they get together or intervene on each other, they help guide each other towards life-changing decisions while facing risks of their own. They don't tell each other what to do, but stand behind their friendships to support and love each other. I loved this book and can't wait for more.

It is pure joy to slip into a story that is located in a familiar town filled with memories, where you get to pickup on the life of an old friend and meet some new friends. In the latest Susan Mallery novel, “The Friends We Keep”, we get to do just that! Nicole and her young son Tyler, who we met in “The Girls of Mischief Bay”, are back and we are treated with their progression of life after divorce. New friends, Hayley and Gabby, are strong females who each have challenging issues to confront and resolve. Hayley yearns for a baby of her own. Gabby has a full life with husband, a teen stepdaughter and almost 5-year-old twins. It is the friendship of these three women, each with their own style, approaches, and diverse families that offers us the most strength, insight, and thought provoking realities of today’s adult life. This town might be Mischief Bay or it could be any of our towns, and these women could be any of our friends. Modern, strong, and romantic, a great read!

Friendships that are lasting take you through the ups and downs of your life. They are there for your happy times, sad times, angry times, and the times you aren't sure about. Those friends who hold your hand, yell at you, hug you, and love you are those friends we keep near our hearts. This is a story of friends like that.
